In reference work, patrons and librarians both share and interpret information needs through narrative texts or stories. Three texts essentially intersect form the reference narrative: the patron text, the professional text, and the institutional text. librarian interprets or translates these texts, working with the patron reach a mutually satisfying conclusion tire reference transaction. This article explores the reference narrative and its relation hermeneutics, or the study of interpretation. ********** daily exchange of information is full of facts, nuances, emotions, metaphors, and other variables, both explicit and implicit. These elements enable us share our personal narrative with others. function of a narrative is imbue life events with a temporal and logical order, demystify them, and establish coherence across past, present, and as yet unrealized (1) In reference work, patrons convey meaning through a narrative or story. A plot evolves as an information need, or problem, is described. patron serves as the primary protagonist in this story, while the librarian is a supporting character, asking questions and paraphrasing clarify the information shared. Human beings think, perceive, imagine, and make moral choices according narrative structures, noted Sarbin. (2) Narrative, then, becomes a mechanism for organizing facts and experience. patron organizes facts and personal experience into a query the librarian must interpret and translate into a new story. new story confirms the librarian's perception of the meaning of the patron's query and explains the library system in relation it. This descriptive essay will explore the reference narrative, or the texts a patron and the librarian exchange during the reference transaction, and the philosophy of hermeneutics. word is rooted in the Greek verb hermeneuein, meaning to interpret. In Greek mythology, Hermes, Zeus's messenger who wore winged boots, was charged with transmuting what is beyond human understanding into a form that human intelligence can grasp. (3) Hermes, in other words, interpreted the messages of the gods, translating them into terms humans could understand. Narratives require the interpretation of both the narrator, in deciding what content include in a story, and the listener, who deciphers the meaning of what was said. reference narrative and hermeneutics hold significant importance for the field of library and information science. Librarians, like physicians, are understand aspects of personhood, personality, and social and psychological functioning in their interactions with patrons. (4) If a patron approaches the reference desk (or sends an e-mail query) and states I need information on green the librarian receives the content of a story, but not the plot. Is the patron interested in the nutritive value of green beans, or how grow them? Through the narrative dialog, the patron may anecdotally reveal an interest in organic gardening, and that an insect is destroying the leaves of his green beans. These clues, uncovered through narrative, orient the librarian search for a natural, chemical-free method address the problem. Leder wrote in reference medicine, The key question is not whether medicine is hermeneutical but how it is so. (6) This is also true for reference and library and information science. …
