Abstract There has been an increased recognition of the work of the Russian psychologist L. S. Vygotsky in the fields of education and educational psychology. John‐Steiner and Mahn review this body of work, focusing on its role in helping create new explanatory theories that address the complexities of schooling in settings that are becoming more linguistically and culturally diverse. This literature is used as a lens to examine salient issues in educational psychology, such as, first and second language acquisition, literacy, writing and current educational reform efforts related to teaching, bilingualism, standardized assessment, and the integration of special needs and culturally diverse students into educational settings.
