to socially responsive contemporary art and visual and material culture. This paper provides an overview of social justice in educational theory as a series of characteristics and emerging practice in art education, followed by problems encountered by implementing the theory. The subjects, the learners and the teachers, the means, and the outcomes are reviewed in social justice education. Issues in teaching social justice education arise from the ideological and economic contexts, the context of practice, and the student context. The paper concludes with four themes for instructing beginning teachers, themes that have developed from the author's practice: identity; understanding beyond ourselves; racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination; and becoming political subjects.
