The method presented in this article permits rapid analysis of the composition of proteinaceous and fatty painting media. It is possible to obtain the volatile derivatives of anlino and fatty acids in a few seconds, at room temperature and in the presence of water; their separation takes only a few minutes. Using this method it is possible to record the amino acid and fatty acid chromatograms simultaneously. Analytical results are presented for proteinaceous media such as cows' milk, casein, egg white and yolk, gelatine, and for fatty media such as linseed, walnut and poppyseed oil. Each type of medium can be identified from the information in the relevant chromatogram, and it may be possible to develop a method for the analysis of mixed media, for example tempera.
