A blue pigment used in Romanesque wall paintings in the Pyrenean region of Catalonia and in Andorra has been studied by microscopy and X-ray diffraction and shown to be based on a clay mineral, aerinite, common in the region. This pigment appears in church frescoes, either alone or in company with other, more common, pigments, and its use may be linked with the prosperity of the community. The geographical distribution of all blue pigments in the area has been studied. There is no problem in using either natural or burnt (green-blue) aerinite for restoration purposes.
