Abstract

Fuzzy set theory has great potential for extending mathematical music theory to new kinds of applications. Fuzzy extensions to the theory of contour demonstrate how computational models of listening to and thinking about music, which models are difficult to make by non-fuzzy means, can be simply and elegantly made. Steve Reich's The Desert Music provides a testing ground for these theories.
