Investigating the Relationship between OfSTED Inspections and School Development Planning

Abstract

This research investigated compatibility between existing School Development Plans (SDPs) and Key Issues (KIs) in OfSTED inspection reports and factors influencing the implementation of post-OfSTED action plans in primary schools. The research used a questionnaire survey of 124 schools recently inspected, interviews with 47 headteachers and examination of supporting documentation (SDPs, copies of KIs and action plans based on the KIs). Headteachers generally found their KIs appropriate and considered them compatible with their SDPs; they were optimistic about implementing action plans despite considerable complexities evident in some KIs and despite apparent difficulties in choosing appropriate success criteria. These aspects are discussed.
