Stimulated by articles by Prediger and Vansickle (1992), Fouad and Dancer (1992), and Swanson (1992), we assess the strengths and weaknesses of research using diverse populations to test Holland's (1985) hexagonal organization of vocational personalities and work environments and to apply it in practical applications. These articles and related literature generally support the hexagonal representation of interests for a variety of populations. We question whether further research that examines data from different groups for evidence of a hexagonal relation among interest measures is now as important as research on the effects of interest inventories on these groups or research that tests alternative ideas about presenting interest inventory results to counselors and their clients. A proposed new measure of congruence based on the angle between persons' or occupations' locations in two-dimensional space is critically examined, and an alternative congruence index is suggested.
