Directors of academic, public, and special libraries were asked to relate the curricula of master's degree programs in library and information science at accredited library schools to their own perceived needs and preferences in the hiring of junior professionals. They were also asked to examine and rank options for alternatives to education and training outside the traditional one-year degree setting. These options include an expansion of the present curricula, movement of courses from the degree program to job training and continuing education, and the elimination of material from course content. Specifically with regard to continuing education, they were asked to rank various options and to relate these to the various techniques of professional and economic motivation. Responses are presented and tabulated both by type and size of library. Tentative conclusions and directions for further research and discussion are identified.
