Results of the Paper Splitting Process

Abstract

This article quantifies the results of paper splitting. Three different test papers were treated with different restoration methods such as paper splitting, resizing and lamination. After treatment of the pH-value, the alkali content and the tensile strength were determined. This article demonstrates that paper splitting is an excellent method of stabilising paper with very different kinds of damage. The restored materials are further conserved with the insertion of an alkaline buffer into the paper.
