This descriptive study of 66 open-ended groups identifies characteristics and patterns found in open group systems. While the groups endure over time, members typically stay for only brief periods. Membership change, the dominant feature of these groups, is associated with the frequent use of systematic procedures for member entry and exit. These procedures, designed to maintain group stability and speed member integration, offer useful guidance to practitioners coping with ongoing and often unpredictable change in open-ended groups.
