The expansion of group services at a time when fewer social workers are trained in social group work practice is exemplified by the widespread offering of parent groups within Massachusetts' Early Intervention (EI) Program, a service to families of very young children with or at risk for developmental delays. This paper examines the uncommon application of group work in one such program in inner-city Boston. What special approaches were needed for effective practice? Using illustrations from the author's work with two parent-child groups, the following practice issues are discussed: working with parents and children together; multiple staffing of groups; the use of activity; and patterns of group development among open-ended women's groups.
