This chapter synthesizes research and theorizing on the development of mental processing, that is, the development of mental representations, the processes used to handle them, and the capacity available for holding and operating on mental representations. We first outline the three traditions in psychology that studied mental processing from different perspectives, namely the experimental, the differential, and the developmental tradition. We then offer a comprehensive model that integrates the three traditions into a common framework able to explain on-line mental functioning, individual differences about it, and its development over the life span. This model specifies both general-purpose and domain-specific cognitive processes. The development of each of these processes and their relations are also described. Finally, the chapter discusses the relations between this general model and ongoing research on the organization and development of the brain.
