This article examines the degree to which airfares can cause air travelers to leak from their nearest airport to take advantage of lower cost tickets. The study specifically looked at air travelers in single-airport regions to see if they would travel significant distances for lower fares. Airport leakage is an important issue for airport managers to gauge the degree to which they can attract sufficient numbers of travelers. Results indicate that travelers may be willing to travel as far as 250 miles for lower fares if they live in single-airport regions. This is substantially farther than what previous studies reported. More work needs to be done on different types of trips and how the leakage factor might affect travelers' choices (e.g., for shorter trips) and the choices of airports travelers can use.
