It is possible, in going on an important journey, to fix our eyes firmly on a distant goal and become so intent upon the pursuit of it that we take little stock of where we are and lose sight altogether of where we have been. In doing so, we may be spending our time rediscovering what is already known and repeating past mistakes. For this reason, it is wise to pause once in a while to reflect, to look back over the paths traveled yesterday and gain perspective on the challenges we face today. Interest in gifted education is not new. In fact, a wealth of information on the subject has been collected over the past few decades. Unfortunately, much of the literature in which these theories, research studies, and practices are reported is now not readily accessible in convenient form. The purpose of this series of publications entitled A Perspective Through a Retrospective is to make available once again the concepts, principles, and applications which are a part of our heritage and, thus, to encourage a better understanding of the present in gifted/talented education through a reexamination of the past.
