The Lao PDR is a small landlocked country at the crossroads of China, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. Many of the villages scattered across its rugged, mountainous terrain are not accessible by road, and subsistence farming is the livelihood mode for a large proportion of its nearly six million people. 1 Although the country has high levels of economic growth, Laos is still assigned ‘least developed’ status by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and there are increasing disparities between rich and poor, non-remote and remote, and ethnic Lao and non-ethnic Lao.
