Marketing students frequently need to complete assignments that require rather extensive library research skills. They are oftenb ill-prepared, however, to meet this challenge. Instructors may take it upon themselves to provide the students with library skills training, but the choice of instructional method forces certain pedagogical tradeoffs. This article addresses the problem by first evaluating the most commonly used methods of library instruction according to four criteria: basic foundation for learning, information literacy skills, transferable research skills, and efficient design of implementation. A new method of library instruction—combining the traditional library workbook with a substantive assignment—is then proposed. Though no method is ideal, the Industry Analysis Workbook overcomes several critical weaknesses of alternative methods and seems well-suited to a wide range of student assignments.
