Abstract

This article explores which understandings of fiction and non-fiction students may develop through the assignments in textbooks in Norwegian Language Arts. This is investigated through a qualitative content analysis of 1943 assignments from three textbooks for upper secondary school. The results show that there is a marked difference between the assignments in the three main parts of the textbooks: The fiction anthologies are dominated by open assignments where the students are invited to express their experiences with and interpretations of the texts. I the non-fiction anthologies, there are several closed assignments where the students are instructed to reveal the meaning of the text by following certain procedures. Connected to the main text in the textbook, there is a large number of assignments where the students are asked to find and repeat information which is explicitly stated in the text. Through these assignments the students may develop the understanding that fiction is rich with potential meanings, while non-fiction is simple and unambiguous. They may also get the impression that the textbook itself is a special non-fiction genre, which is unnecessary to analyse critically. These results indicate that the assignment culture in Norwegian Language Arts is characterised by older academic understandings and not fully in line with the current national curriculum.
