In current German-speaking music theory the relation of ‘system’ and ‘history’ is intensively discussed. The question in the center of this essay deals with the different function, which the appeal to history of theory and history of composition has for music theory on the one hand and historical musicology on the other. Especially important in this context seems to be the role of music analysis. It is shown that both subjects have different epistemological interests, despite large overlaps in content and methodology.
