In the last fifteen years there has been much interest in the development of attention (e.g., Pick, Frankel, & Hess, 1975). Re searchers have examined many facets of attention, for example, se lective listening (e.g., Maccoby, 1967), attention during discrimina tion learning (e.g., Zeaman & House, 1963), and attention in per ceptual learning (Gibson, 1969). This research, however, has focused exclusively on attentional skills, ignoring the possibility that the child's understanding of attention may also be developing. It is likely that as a part of general cognitive development children de velop concepts of attention which may be intimately related to the development and utilization of attentional skills. The present study examined the development of concepts of attention. Although children's understanding of attention has not been ex amined previously, there is a growing interest in the general area of children's understanding of psychological phenomena. Work on social cognition, the understanding of the perceptions, feelings, and thoughts of others, has focused on role taking and social attribution (e.g., Shantz, 1975). In addition investigators have examined chil dren's developing knowledge about comprehension (Markman, 1977), language (Osherson & Markman, 1975), communication (Fla vell. Note 1), memory (Flavell & Wellman, 1977), general problem solving (Brown, in press), and the recursive nature of thinking (Miller, Kessel, & Flavell, 1970). These studies, taken together, are beginning to provide a picture of developmental changes in concepts of people as information-processing devices—beings with a limited capacity to attend to, perceive, encode, store, recall, and manipulate informa tion. By far the most work has been concerned with metamemory,
