This chapter charts the progress of research on adolescence in variationist sociolinguistics and explores the shaping of the variationist enterprise. In particular, it explores some of the relationships between different strands of research and suggests that a combined approach could lead to a better understanding of the role adolescents play in language variation and change, as well as further enriching our knowledge of the stylistic capabilities of, and constraints on, human language behaviour. The chapter produces a more nuanced approach to the social categories considered in variationist analyses. A section demonstrates how research into adolescence is leading our understanding of the nature of the relationship between language and forms of social categorisation. The chapter also illustrates how perceptual experiments and discourse analysis can expand our understanding of the social meanings associated with language features.
