Games play an important role in childhood. They can be defined as play activities that are structured, rule based, and goal directed. After reviewing Piaget's analysis of games, the entry discusses how board games have contributed to our understanding of cognitive development. It then reviews gender differences and how games have been used in education, both for teaching specific content, such as mathematics, and for developing overall cognitive ability, such as intelligence. Given their popularity with children, video games are discussed at some length with regard to cognition, aggressive behavior, and obesity. Finally, the entry discusses the use of games in psychotherapy.
