The field of organizational communication considers the relationship between organizations and organizing, and communication. Although topics have varied widely over the field's five or so decades of existence, organizational communication is perhaps best known for how it engages with topics at various intersections or interplays. This entry is organized around a series of framing questions through which the field might be understood. It begins with thewhen—a brief history of the field beginning with the Redding tradition of scholarship. It then explores the interplay of structure and process, individuals and organizations, micro and macro, and internal and external; these are thewhat, who, how, andwhereof the field. Thewhyquestion is then discussed as a way to frame various scholarly commitments. Finally, the entry ends with connections between strategic communication and ideas for further scholarship.
