Abstract In this chapter, I explore empathy and deep listening as potential strategies to support the musical growth of developing musicians. Specifically, I explore ways that jazz educators might model empathy through perspective-taking, flow, deep listening, and empathetic attunement to create the conditions for empathy and relational trust among students. These strategies can be implemented into curriculum and instruction by jazz educators using mentorship, engaging in open-ended dialogue, considering place-based pedagogy, and integrating musical empathy. Additionally, I contemplate ways that jazz educators might encourage students to interpret the nonverbal communication of other musicians, as this practice may enhance deep listening skills, which help to strengthen personal connections and build community.
