Understanding the AI-driven relationship between institutional rankings and research production is still developing. This study uses Random Forest, Permutation Importance, and LASSO regression to uncover significant drivers of research and innovation in several academic areas. Using a variety of academic disciplines as a case study, we discovered that PhD output, travel grants, and scholarships greatly improve research publication rates and innovation rankings. Tertiary financing indicated as the most important impacting factor (37.1%), followed by internet connectivity (27.8%) and PhD production (22.3%). AI-powered approaches identified complicated feature interdependencies, providing dependable insights for policy and funding decisions. These findings emphasize the necessity of continuing to invest in digital infrastructure, PhD programs, and higher education funding in order to improve global research competitiveness, institutional rankings, and build an academic excellence culture.
