Curriculum is a series of events intended to have educational consequences, often conceived as a set of plans or materials. Three dimensions that can be taken into account in analyzing curriculum in art education can also be used to formulate policy within which curriculum work can go on in classrooms, schools, and school districts. The three dimensions of curriculum are (a) five different orientations to the aims and content of curriculum in art education; (b) three contexts in which curriculum development occurs; and (c) the degree of prescriptiveness, from rule-governed to open-ended, in the materials developed. In the end, questions about curriculum effectiveness must be determined by getting into classrooms and assessing the curriculum in use.
