Videotaping has been recommended as a technique to evaluate personal and professional response to role-playing requirements in such fields as education and psychology.1 Can it be a successful technique in evaluation of professional roles in public library service? Beginning in 1975, reference librarians in the Orlando Public Library system volunteered to take part in individual videotaping sessions to see (1) whether videotape self-evaluation could be done without disruption of service and without discomfort to the staff and to patrons, and (2) whether videotape self-evaluation could improve public service. Could the videotaped librarians be made better aware of personal and professional strengths or shortcomings? Specifically, could videotape selfevaluation show answers to such questions as How do I react at the public service desk?
