Research on innovative work behavior (IWB) is often limited to the elements that motivate employees to be more innovative, while most studies on job insecurity focus on the negative effects of this phenomenon. This chapter addresses this issue by constructing a theory-driven model. It examines both social exchange theory and threat rigidity theory as mediating mechanisms underlying the relationship between job insecurity and IWB. Building on and extending previous research on job insecurity, social exchange theory, stress theory, and IWB, the chapter discusses a comprehensive model of job insecurity and IWB. The model presented in the chapter incorporates some hypotheses about the nature of the relationship between job insecurity and IWB. The chapter also discusses three directions for future research that may improve theoretical knowledge.
