This paper is concerned with research undertaken with secondary teacher training students, mentor music teachers working in partnership with college tutors and students in secondary schools, and secondary school pupils, in Worcestershire, England. The pupils are 11‐14 years old and are working in Key Stage Three of the National Curriculum for Music. The musical activities in which they are involved include listening, appraising, performing, and composing. Recent findings of Her Majesty's Inspectors for Schools from the Office for Standards in Education indicate that there is important work to be done in improving communication skills between music teachers and pupils at secondary level. This paper describes the development and trial of materials designed to enhance pupil and student teacher communication in the secondary school classroom, and forms the first part of a two‐part study. The second part will be concerned with finding ways of improving classroom questioning techniques in student music educators.
