Abstract

A study to determine some common misconceptions held by junior secondary school students who have studied Unit 2 of the Nigerian Secondary School Science Project (NSSSP) Biology, Book One, is described. Students' explanations of selected ecological concepts and principles were obtained by classroom observation, essay test answers, and clinical interviews. There appeared to be two sources of misconceptions: conceptions (misconceptions) already held by the students, and misconceptions introduced during instruction. Some implications of the knowledge of student misconceptions for future revisions of the NSSSP Biology and for the improvement of classroom teaching are discussed.
