The purpose of our study was to determine the underlying neuropsychological constructs measured by both the standard and printed stimulus card formats of the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) with 934 learning‐disabled children. Subtests of the complete Halstead‐Reitan Neuropsychological Battery and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children‐Revised were used as predictor variables for each PPVT version and on an index of the difference scores between the two PPVT measures. Results showed that, although the two modes of PPVT administration offered much overlapping neuropsychological information, particularly in verbal and attentional areas, there was unique information tapped by each. However, less than 6% of the variability in the difference scores was explained by neuropsychological measures. Results lend support for the independent interpretation of scores from both formats of PPVT administration. Implications for clinicians involved in the assessment of hearing‐impaired and learning‐disabled children are discussed.
