Bibliographic instruction (BI) for high school students by college librarians is a viable form of collaboration between educators at the secondary and college levels. Several different goals for such instruction have been advanced, and a BI session can involve several of these goals simultaneously. The goal of promoting higher education during a BI session for visiting high school students involves discussing the specific resources demonstrated as examples of resources found in a college library and making the tacit assumption that all of the students will eventually pursue higher education. This article reviews the goals of instruction as presented in the literature and suggests that the promotion of higher education is a viable and valuable goal.
