Central Ideas in Chemistry: An Alternative Perspective

Abstract

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Central ideas define fundamental understandings in a domain and frame curriculum development, instruction, and assessment. How these central ideas are conceptualized can thus have a major impact on what teachers and instructors do in the classroom and on the understandings that students develop. This commentary presents a reflection on how central ideas are traditionally presented in introductory chemistry courses and suggests an alternative way of framing these understandings to convey a more authentic view of the nature of our discipline.
