Knowledge Creation and the Journal Editor’s Role

Abstract

Much has been written on the role of reviewers in the academic publishing process, yet little guidance is available to new editors of academic journals. When I took over as a new editor, what I received in the form of guidance was a set of cardboard boxes in the mail (filled with manuscripts) with all the best wishes of the previous editor. Upon asking senior people in the field for suggestions, I was told that I can do “anything I want.” These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
