The article presents an analytical review of contemporary Russian and foreign research on the development and functioning of executive functions (EF) in children with mild intellectual disabilities (mild mental retardation). The relevance of the topic is determined by the high prevalence of intellectual disabilities and the crucial role of regulatory processes in successful adaptation and learning. Based on the analysis of literary data, the author concludes that executive function deficits are a core characteristic of intellectual disabilities, significantly influencing cognitive development and adaptive behavior. The specific features of the relationship between EF and theory of mind in children with mild intellectual disabilities are discussed separately. Particular attention is paid to methodological problems in this field: the fragmentation of research (not covering all components of EF), sample heterogeneity, and varying theoretical approaches to the structure of executive functions themselves. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of further longitudinal research, the development of differentiated intervention programs tailored to individual EF profiles, and the study of the impact of developing regulatory functions on improving adaptive skills in children with mild intellectual disabilities.
