The Meaning of Work (MOW) Research Program is a body of cross-national organizational research that includes the original MOW study, the MOW-Replication (MOW-RE) study, and the Eastern European MOW (MOW-EAST) study. Developed by researchers from eight nations in 1978, the MOW Research Program attempts to discover the values, beliefs, attitudes, and expectations that people in industrialized societies hold regarding working, including self-employment. The international studies lend themselves to analysis of such macro-variables as educational systems and policy issues and to the development and revision of human resources interventions, including motivational programs and work-stress management. Following an explanation of the institutional underpinnings, study designs, instrument designs, data-gathering techniques, and results of all three MOW studies, advice is offered to researchers interested in accessing the MOW data sets.(SAA)
