OVERVIEW:Having a highly motivated technical workforce is one of the key ingredients for fostering the innovative performance necessary for an organization to “stay in the game” in today's global competitive world. With increased business experience and perspective, technical leaders soon realize that they are better off having technical professionals with A-rated motivations and B-rated capabilities rather than the other way around. Or as Edison once remarked: “I have more respect for the person who gets there than for the brilliant person with a thousand ideas who does nothing.” Examination of the motivation potential of job-related task dimensions shows how managers and technical professionals differ in their orientation priorities with respect to each of these task dimensions—a kind of motivational dualism. Organizations and their Human Resources departments need to develop broader policies and procedures for dealing with this motivational dualism within an ambidextrous organization.
